Folk & Classical

Art in India, being rich in tradition finds expression not only in Classical form but also in varied folk forms peculiar to local culture. In this context Tamil folk has a special place in the musical scheme of things. Tamil folk music has an age-old tradition that vents emotional expression relevant to both day-to-day life and entertainment. There is a school of thought that opines that classical music has evolved from folk music. In this regard, Brhaddhvani has been in the forefront of research in finding empirical evidence for this school of thought. Sankari having got a flair for folk music, has led many ensembles featuring the theme of 'Folk to Classical'. Doordharshan has telecast some of these programmes.
